Gel Projects contains a comprehensive feature that allows complex workflows to be built by customising the rules logic stored in the database.  Unlike some configurations tools, Gel Projects provides a full embedded programming language to allow configuration experts to modify the complex business rules that define the workflows within the system.  As with the POW Generator this flexibility ensures the enterprise is agile and can adapt to an ever changing competitive environment.

The State Machine

The main area that requires customisation to business rules and workflow is in the Stage-Gate rules engine.  Companies that follow the Stage-Gate product management and development methodology will need to implement their own configuration of stages, states, gates, entry and exit criteria.  These inter-related entities are jointly referred to as the State-Machine and they provide a key component of the Stage-Gate implementation within Gel Projects.  How the State-Machine handles particular events and actions is defined using the configuration scripting language inside Gel Projects. 

Flexibility Without Loss of Control

Although Gel Projects provides a powerful scripting engine to implement the various facets of the Stage-Gate implementation in hand it does not do so in a way that could result in a lack of transparency or control.  The system includes comprehensive auditing tools that detail how a project has moved through the various states within the State Machine, showing who changed which data items and why they resulted in state changes or gate events being fired.
